A Short History of
CHIPMAN GOLDEN SENIORS
By Pauline Diduck

Located 40 miles east of Edmonton on highway 15, Chipman is a very friendly Village where you can see people greeting each other on the street - smiling.

In October 1982, a meeting was organized at the Chipman Curling Rink to organize the club. A bingo was held Monday evening, a lunch was served and a meeting was held following this.

In 1983, an election was held and an executive selected.

President: Jim Mundy;
Vice President: George Hrynyk;
Secretary: Helen Sharun
Treasurer: Alex Borys

Board of Directors,
Olga Antoniuk
John Herchek
Pauline Diduck
Harry Sharun
Joe Letawsky
Walter Melnyk
Elsie Gubersky.

During this meeting, it was decided to purchase the building that had once held a pool hall and barber shop and was renovated to a cafe owned by Alvin Hauer. Obviously money had to be raised to purchase the building from Mr. Hauer. April 1983 we were incorporated as a Club under the name Chipman Golden Seniors. This was done by holding bingos, selling Nevada tickets and serving up pyrogy suppers the last Friday of each month as well as selling bulk pyrogies. We also established an Honor Roll for donations of $100.00 from individuals or families. Our funds were increasing and with a White Elephant sale and a few grants, we had enough to purchase the building and start much needed renovations such as shingles for the roof and improvements to the kitchen.

By 1985, we realized that the building needed to be expanded so an addition to the east and south was planned to house a recreation room, Library room, exercise room, some storage and a furnace room. Our club had 68 at the time and included people of all trades (carpenters, Plumbers etc) who along with other volunteers helped complete the project by 1989. The money we had from our fundraising and a government grant helped pay for the renovation. Continuing to raise money, we were able to purchase a van for members to visit other clubs, do the shopping for the club and plan holiday trips for our members; provide donations to furnish a hospital room at the Lamont Health Care Hospital; Camp He Ho Ha; C.N.I.B.; Diabetes Association ; and others

We continue to enjoy floor curling, a big event for many in the community and are looking forward to celebrating our 25th anniversary on April 12, 2008.

Although over the years many of our members have departed, some are still very active and we continue to gain new members who volunteer to help at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village; catering for banquets; making and serving pyrogies; providing breakfasts for local clubs such as Car Crafters and the Ag Society; Easter bake sale; raffles and quilting and painting of Easter eggs (pysanka).
